Lava Rocks For Landscaping Or Decorations

Lava Rocks For Landscaping Or Decorations
By Jason Brunson

The first thing that comes to mind when I say lava rock is volcanoes. I guess we should be a little clearer. Lava is liquid rock floating on the surface of the earth. When it is inside the earth it is called magma. Depending on how and where magma cools, it has different names. For example, when it cools under the earths surface very slow and with pressure, it is called Basalt. When it blows out of a vent and forms a volcano, some of the rock is called cinder. This is the rock that forms cinder cone volcanoes.

One of the most familiar volcanic rock is obsidian. It is hard and looks like black glass. Sometimes it has white flakes and is known as snow flake obsidian. When this obsidian cools and falls through air or water, we call it foamed obsidian.

Our volcano on the Red Dome Property is a cinder cone volcano full of Foamed obsidian.
This product is very light. When filling a bulk truck semi, the truck will be full before it is over weight. In other words, the truck reaches is maximum cubic yard capacity before it reaches it's weight limit. Other rock products reach their weight limit first.

We offer volcanic rock in bulk and wholesale quantities. Products come in six categories. Our smallest product is 3/8 inch minus. It includes 3/8 rocks and on down to sand and fine volcanic powder. Next, 3/8 chip is the 3/8 rocks only. This size does not have the sand except any sand that may be created in movement during shipping. ¾ Rock is every thing above 3/8 and below the 1 inch category. Next is one inch, 1 &1/2 inch and the last is boulders of ant size.

The volcano in Fillmore, Utah is a variety of colors. Black Lava rock can vary from shiny black to a grey green and any dark color in between. Sometimes we find pockets of brilliant purple crystals. Red rocks range from burnt orange to maroon red and everything in between.

Chocolate lava. So you ask, What is chocolate lava? It is a mix of everything between red and black. As we mine the mountain, colors can change from scoop to scoop. We try to keep the colors separate, but at times, they mix and that is where the chocolate lava comes from.
